Retro Liverpool Kits through the Years

Liverpool is one of the grandest, most famous, and trophy-heavy clubs in global football. The six-time champions of Europe, 19-time champions of England have always sported classic football shirts which reflect their stature in the game.

It was once impossible to imagine a vintage Liverpool shirt not sponsored by Carlsberg. In recent years, they have switched things up. But most historical football kit enthusiasts will tell you that their best retro Liverpool kits came in that 18-year-long stretch between 1992 and 2010.

The 2004-05 Champions League-winning team sported a simple Reebok design with white detailing around the underarm. It wasn't the best look, but replicas still fly off the shelves because of the associations with that famous night in Istanbul. Before that Reebok deal, Liverpool’s old football shirts were Adidas-manufactured, making for some of the freshest designs in the club's history. The first classic football kit they wore in the Premier League era featured the iconic three-stripe over-the-shoulder sash, which Adidas has recently revived. Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, John Barnes and company all looked resplendent in the now-iconic retro Liverpool football shirt design.

There's no shortage of stellar away designs either. Liverpool arguably hit their peak in terms of their retro football shirts in 95-96, with a four-panelled, button-collared white and green beauty. Such was its popularity that Liverpool and New Balance remastered it for the 2017-18 campaign. The textured, all-grey 08-09 away shirt divided opinion at first, but eventually won the doubters over – in no small part because of the famous 4-1 victory at Old Trafford and a rare Liverpool title challenge.

Now back on top, it's likely that the symbolism of recent Liverpool football kits will propel otherwise ordinary kits into modern classics. But in terms of sheer aesthetic value, it's hard to look past classic Liverpool kits like the 2009-10 away shirt. The marriage of black and gold makes for a stunning optic, with the centralised Adidas logo and minimal red detailing rounding off the design perfectly.

But for our money, if you're searching for the best vintage Liverpool away kit of all-time, you needn't look any further than the 96-97 off-white Reebok classic. It looks like a cross between something you'd see at Wimbledon or at a nightclub – unsurprisingly, it’s a cult classic among football kit collectors and Liverpudlians alike.
