In modern football, no single club has had more of an influence on the game as Barcelona. They have gifted the world some of the greatest players the game has ever seen, provided countless tactical innovations and won trophy after trophy after trophy. It's strange to think that their first European Cup title came as recently as 1992, with current manager Ronald Koeman scoring a famous free-kick winner. Their second European title didn’t arrive until 2006; in the 14 years since, only their great rivals Real Madrid have been able to go toe-to-toe with them in terms of continental success.
They are a club deeply and deservedly proud of their heritage and their tradition. This is symbolised in Barcelona’s classic football shirts, which often feature a nod to their Catalan identity. For over a century, the Blaugrana played in a vintage football kits characterised by vertical blue and red stripes. In recent years, however, they’ve mixed things up from their original historical football kit roots, playing in horizontal stripes in 2015-16 and then – to their fanbase’s horror – blasphemous checks in 2019-20.
The 15-16 season, when Barca first broke with tradition, holds much fonder memories than the patchwork disaster of the 19-20 campaign. With that famous forward trident of Messi, Neymar and Suarez. Barcelona stormed to victory in La Liga, amassing 91 points and winning the Copa Del Rey a few weeks later. As the first to depart from the traditional design of past vintage Barca shirts, the hooped home kit with golden flashes will be a collector’s item in years to come.
Looking further back in time through Barcelona’s retro football shirt history, Barca have had their fair share of unorthodox classic kits. The 1996-97 two-tone teal-blue away kit evokes memories of Ronaldo in his magisterial pomp as Barca won La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Cup Winners' Cup. There was a lot going on in this kaleidoscopic Kappa vintage kit – it was undeniably a product of its time. The fragmented panels design make it look almost like a deconstructed garden shed; it's a wonderfully chaotic retro Barca shirt.
The half and half, UNICEF-sponsored home kit from the 08-09 treble-winning season was another standout home shirt. Mind you – it can't have taken the designers long to create. But sometimes simplicity really is genius.
