In modern times it seems like Bayern Munich have always worn red home shirts, hence the name Die Roten. But Bayern started with sky blue and then white, followed by various striped combinations. Before adopting the rich red shirt now associated with the club in 1974, coinciding with the start of a long association with Adidas.

An all-red strip with varying design elements was worn until 1991, apart from an all-white strip in 1977-78. 1991 saw the emergence of the Adidas Equipment branding and the use of blue on Bayern shirts for the first time in 20 years.

The shirts for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons replaced the brighter red associated with the club with maroon, justified as having historic connections, and charcoal sleeves. Complimented by the three white stripes on the sleeves and white flashes to the collar, it was a great looking kit.

For 2007-09 two broad white bands across the torso of the red shirt, alongside the three white lines on the sleeves was a great variation. For 2017-18 it was white vertical lines that produced a sharp looking design.

There is also nothing like gold to enhance the all-red kit, and we like the way Adidas did that for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.

For 2013-14 the gold was replaced by white, and this kit became iconic as it heralded the beginning of a peak period for German football, with one of the all-time great Bayern teams beating Borussia Dortmund in the all-Bundesliga 2013 Champions League final. Next season Germany won the World Cup.
